On Wednesday, June 28th the Rotary Club of Lake Murray-Irmo was able to present four local non-profits with a grant through their small gifts and grants program. This is made possible through the fundraising efforts. Because of this Babcock Center, Keep the Midlands Beautiful, Sister Care, and The USO were all able to receive checks at Wednesday’s meeting. Thank you to the club members for all the hard work you put into fundraising for the club.
Tickets are on sale for $25 or 5 for $100! Some of the proceeds will go to benefiting Alzheimers and Polio.

At each meeting Rotarian’s are able to give a “Happy Dollar” to celebrate a joyous or happy event. At the end of the presidents term he or she can donate this money to an organization of their choosing. This year’s President Harold Crawford chose to donate the “Happy Dollar” money to the District 5 Foundation for continued help in the ongoing flood relief. Paula Hite was in attendance to accept a check on behalf of the District 5 Foundation.
On February 6th, 2016 dedicated volunteers of The Rotary Club of Lake Murray-Irmo spent their Saturday morning cleaning up litter from our adopted highways in Irmo.
Through the Adopt-A-Highway and Adopt-A-Street programs, we take part in preserving and maintaining streets throughout the Midlands, particularly for us the Irmo area. We remove litter from our segments of road at least four times a year for two years.
The benefits are significant to our local community. Not only does it serve as an educational tool against littering, it establishes stewardship of our public lands. This program helps advance tourism, development and quality of life for all of our citizens by improving the appearance of our area and saves taxpayer dollars by performing a valuable public service on a volunteer basis.
It takes us all to keep our community beautiful and we are proud to be part of this program.
Rotarian’s have a tradition of supporting the Foundation by honoring others. Ida LeTulle Taylor became a Paul Harris Fellow in 1978 when her husband, then-District Governor Vann Taylor, made a donation in her name in honor of their 34th wedding anniversary. The gift also made her the 25,000th Paul Harris Fellow.
At the International Assembly in 1979, then-RI President-elect James Bomar challenged each Rotary club to make one non-Rotarian a Paul Harris Fellow. The Rotary Club of Pikesville, Maryland, USA, responded by making a donation in the name of Mother Teresa in 1980. The entertainer Pearl Bailey also became a Paul Harris Fellow through a joint effort of the Rotary clubs in Cape Cod, Massachusetts.
Many other notable figures have been named as Paul Harris Fellows, including U.S. President Jimmy Carter, Russian President Boris Yeltsin, U.S. astronaut James Lovell, UN Secretary-General Javier Perez de Cuellar, and Jonas Salk.
The Rotary Club of Lake Murray-Irmo is proud to honor our Fire Chief Mike Sonefeld for his hard work and dedication to this community, especially through these trying last months. Thank you Chief for your leadership and constant effort to make our Fire District the best it can be. Congratulations.
Lake Murray-Irmo Rotary Club is pleased to announce the upcoming Golf “CART” outing on the 19th of April 2016. This golf outing will start at noon. The purpose of the event is to earn money to support Alzheimer’s disease research.
The specific program we will support is South Carolina’s own Rotary Coins for Alzheimer’s Research Trust (CART). The CART Fund is dedicated to raising funds to provide “seed” money for cutting edge, high impact research in hopes of finding a cure/prevention for Alzheimer’s disease. CART was started by the Sumter SC Rotary Club in 1996. Today, it is common to find a blue CART bucket for loose change on tables at many Rotary functions at clubs throughout the southeast. Since its inception, over $5.2 million has been collected. Twenty-nine grants have been given since 1999. Grant recommendations to the 501c3 CART Fund Board of Directors are through a Grants Advisory Team make up of medical researchers from prestigious universities. The bylaws of the CART require that 100% of the donations go into the research efforts. The CART Fund’s nonprofit tax ID is 31-1466051.
At a recent Rotary meeting, one of our members suggested we dedicate our annual golf outing to this effort. After unanimous board approval, we set out to create the best captain’s choice golf event in the midlands. The event will be at the Member’s Club at Woodcreek. We can support up to 36 teams at $400 per team. In addition, we are seeking an exclusive platinum tournament sponsor for a donation of $2500. The tournament also has gold ($1500), silver ($750), and bronze ($450) levels of sponsorship. Advertising opportunities and other benefits change by sponsorship level. Details on these levels and other funding opportunities can be found on the attached trifold brochure. The brochure also can be used to sign up teams or for sponsorship requests.
This is an important effort. Recently we asked the members of LMI Rotary how many had family or friends touched by Alzheimers. The response was 100%. This is a troubling statistic and it causes this effort to be very personal for those involved. Every dollar spent to find a cure is potentially the most important dollar spent to date.

District 5 Foundation’s Paula Hite visited The Rotary Club of Lake Murray-Irmo’s weekly breakfast meeting. The District 5 Foundation is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that exists to support teachers and students in Lexington/Richland District 5 in learning readiness, arts and cultural experiences, science and technology and leadership development. Paula spoke to us about the District 5 Foundation’s Flood Victims Fund. The Flood Victims Fund has been established to serve students and families impacted by the devastating floods and their aftermath. There are 200 plus families affected in our district. They have successfully raised over $75,000 to aid in this relief work. All money raised goes directly to flood victims. District social workers identify need within our school district and oversee the distribution of funds. So far monies raised have gone towards things such as deposits on rental apartments as well as paid for hotel stays and other basic supplies such as mattresses. Club President Harold Crawford presented Paula Hite with a check for $2500. We look forward to a continued partnership with District 5 Foundation and supporting their great work.
