Dr. Olin “Hank” Powell was inducted as a new member of the Rotary Club of Lake Murray-Irmo. Dr. Powell is a retired physician. Dr. Powell was sponsored by Mr. Lyman Whitehead. The membership is excited to welcome Dr. Powell as a new member of our club.
Our speaker Wednesday morning was Mr. Alan Buck. He is no stranger to our club as he is the brother of club member Brian Buck. He has also spoken to our club before about the electric car industry. On Wednesday, however, he spoke to our club out Bitcoin and Blockchain. He tried to simplify the term for the club members and explain exactly what Bitcoin is. It is a cryptocurrency that does not require a centralized bank system. Bitcoin was formed in 2009 during the recession when the banking systems failed. Because the technology is still new and there are still too many ways for your Bitcoins to be stolen through the dark web, Mr. Buck didn’t recommend going out and purchasing any. It is always a pleasure to hear what Mr. Buck has to say. The membership enjoyed hearing him speak.
In lieu of our normal Wednesday morning meeting, we will have a Club Social. This will be Wednesday, August 22nd at the Hilton Garden Inn (434 Columbiana Drive). Please Join us from 6pm to 7pm. Remember to invite potential new members. President Kevin has deemed this “ask someone you went to school with to Rotary mont.” So this would be a perfect opportunity. See everyone Wednesday night!
Our speaker Wednesday, August 15th was Lisa Hostetler of Lawyer Lisa. She talked to us about estate planning and the probate process. She stressed the importance of having documents in place in case you are no longer able to make your own decisions. She went through the 4 major things and documents you should have in place in case this happens. She was very informative and the club enjoyed hearing her speak.
On Wednesday, August 8th the club welcomed Mr. Alan Shoemaker as our speaker. Mr. Shoemaker spoke to our club about a recent trip he and a group of friends took to South Africa. There were 17 people on the trip. They saw many beautiful animals and National Parks. They visited and ate with the locals of the area. Overall it sounded like a great time had by all. Thank you, Mr. Shoemaker, for sharing about your trip with our membership.
